Bandon Hill Primary School

Science

At Bandon Hill we aim to nurture our children’s natural sense of curiosity and creativity through our teaching of science. From nursery and reception through to year 6, children will acquire and build on the core skills and knowledge, allowing them to develop a deeper understanding of the ever-changing world they live in and relate new learning to relevant, real-world contexts.

Through our enquiry-based, hands-on curriculum, children are encouraged to develop and use scientific vocabulary to explain their thinking verbally and in writing. Starting at the Early Years Foundation Stage, through to KS1 and KS2, children will recognise and use seven key working scientifically skills (which can be found in the downloads section below), encouraging them to explore, question, investigate and explain the natural world.

  • Children are encouraged to be daring in their scientific investigations, asking questions about what they observe as well as using creative and critical thinking to explore and solve problems.

  • Through scientific exploration, children become resilient and collaborative learners, learning from their mistakes and identifying and exploring alternative scientific approaches.

  • Pupils are supported to develop their understanding of science and their ability to test and answer questions posed through different types of scientific enquiry - including observing changes over time, noticing patterns, grouping and classifying, as well as comparative and fair tests.

  • Exploration of scientific concepts encourages pupils to ask questions and develop their curiosity. They are ambitious in the development of their scientific skills and recognise themselves as scientists.

  • Children are motivated to learn and apply working scientifically skills and to talk about what they have discovered and observed. They are equipped to use scientific language to communicate their ideas and have the confidence to explore alternative ideas or explanations.
